But, if you want to make full use of what FNB Connect has to offer then pair it with their SIM card and you may qualify for rewards as an FNB Connect mobile network subscriber.

The First Rand Group’s mobile network and ISP arm, FNB Connect, have on offer cellphones, tablets, laptops, wearable tech devices, and other tech gadgets on the various FNB channels. And as a mobile network one can see that FNB Connect is positioning itself as a digital shopping platform for its clients.

FNB’s banking customers have so much more variety on the bank’s app, where they are not only banking but can apply to buy tech gadgets, settle bills, load airtime, and so much more! So, let’s guide you through FNB Connect cellphone contracts.

How do FNB Connect’s cellphone contracts work?

FNB Connect cellphone contracts work a bit differently from other mobile network operators. There is some pre-qualification criterion to pass, first.

How do you qualify for a contract?

The criteria include:

  • You will need to be a new, current FNB, or RMB bank transactional account holder. New FNB customers must ensure that debit orders, beneficiary, and salary switching are processed when opening the account.
  • A transacting FNB account. A set minimum amount of money going through the account. This is different for each qualifying account type. This is to show that money is being debited from this account and that the account you’re using to apply is currently active.
  • Select an account to be debited. FNB needs to tie your cellphone contract to this transactional account, which is usually a cheque account (it can be a credit card, too) that receives money regularly or your monthly salary.

For a comprehensive list of qualifying criteria please contact FNB using this contact information.

FNB Connect price plans

The current 2023 price plans include

  • FNB Connect Prepaid
  • FNB Connect Postpaid
  • FNB Connect Top Up

FNB Connect’s cellphone contracts can no longer be taken as phone-only contracts, so all cellphone contracts now bundled with a mobile plan in the form of a data plan or call minutes plan.

Previously, cellphone contracts could be separate, where you could purchase a cellphone which you would pay off over 24 months while using your existing SIM card. You are now compelled to port your existing cellphone number, or take a new number from FNB Connect’s cellphone network.

Surprisingly, even when buying a printer you will have to take up a mobile plan, where they sold an Epson Ecotank L3210 with a prepaid Voice & SMS plan.

Selecting an FNB Connect deal

We went shopping for an Apple iPhone deal on the FNB website to compare the deal with an established network operator. We thus looked for the latest and most popular one, the iPhone 14 128GB.

FNB Connect:

  • Apple iPhone 14 128GB – Midnight
  • R1239 per month over 24 months
  • Price plan: Top Up M, which includes a monthly provision of 100 minutes, 800MB, and 100 SMSes

A similar MTN contract:

  • Apple iPhone 14 128GB
  • R1239 per month over 24 months
  • Price plan: MEGA GIGS L, which includes a monthly provision of 100 minutes, and 12GB

We found the iPhone 14 with the same repayment amount of R1239 over 24 months and with the same allocation of talk minutes of 100 minutes per month.

The advantage that MTN has over FNB Connect is the amount of monthly data allocation (if you don’t consider the MTN’s robust network), which totals 12GB per month
