Best Huawei phones to buy in South Africa

Last modified date

The second most popular smartphones in South Africa are the Huawei smartphones, according to statistics gathered by Statista.com. Huawei takes the Southern African smartphone market very seriously. You can see it in the range of phones available, from the cheapest, the most aesthetically pleasing, to the best-performing business phones.

You can also see it in their marketing promotions, using South Africa’s major brand influencers like Boity Thulo and Dj Tira:

And Huawei keeps releasing gorgeous phone after gorgeous phone, having recently announced for sale to the South African public a pair of Huawei Nova 10 Pro and Huawei Nova 10 smartphones. The latest Huawei Nova smartphones are “inspired by fashion, boldness and capability”, Huawei tweeted.

Huawei smartphone range in South Africa

The range of Huawei smartphones that are for sale in South Africa includes these:

  • Huawei P Series
  • Huawei Nova Series
  • Huawei Mate Series

What seems to be missing is the Enjoy Series and the Pocket S. But we have available for sale most of the phones that Huawei makes here in South Africa.

The Huawei Y Series budget-friendly smartphones have been discontinued in 2022. Look for the Nova Y phones if you’re looking for a cheap Huawei phone for sale in South Africa.

When you browse Huawei’s range of smartphones notice the year they were released in because Huawei has moved on from being a pure Android operating system phone that integrates (read: depends) on Google and the Alphabet company.

Huawei now uses an operating system called Harmony OS. The latest 2023 Huawei models are currently on EMUI 13.1.

The Huawei P Series

Focusing on a no-frills bar/slab design the Huawei P Series phones are the powerful and high-end workhorses of the Chinese brand.

The latest iterations of the P Series are the Huawei P60 and Huawei P60 Pro phones, which replaced the brilliant 2022 P50 and P50 Pro:

  • The P60’s are on EMUI 13.1, the current version of Huawei’s operating system
  • One less less than its predecessor

Despite its age the Huawei P50 and P50 Pro are still brilliant high-end smartphones with a 50MP main camera and 4K video shooting. They still stunning-looking, shiny premium smartphones that nobody would believe were released two years prior!

We did not notice any major leaps and jumps in technology for this iteration, so it seems the P60 and P60 Pro are more of an evolution rather than a revolution.

Here is a list of the Huawei P Series phones and the year of their release:

  • Huawei P60 and P60 Pro (2023)
  • Huawei P50 Pocket Premium Edition (2021)
  • Huawei P50 and P50 Pro (2021)
  • Huawei P40 and P40 Pro+ (2020)
  • Huawei P40 lite (2020)
  • Huawei P30 and P30 Pro (2019)

The Huawei Nova Series

A flashy but very capable looker! The exterior phone colours and materials are different! The looks: head-turning!

We would term the Huawei Nova Series smartphones as the fashion-conscious P series. They bring the big cameras and the power and then mix in style and a gorgeous design.

With the defunct Y series, the Nova Y series seems to have picked up the budget-friendly end of the Huawei brand.

Here are Huawei Nova Series phones and the year of their release:

  • Huawei Nova 11, Nova 11i, and Nova 11 Pro (2023)
  • Huawei Nova 10, Nova 10 SE, and Nova 10 Pro (2022)
  • Huawei Nova Y91 (2023)
  • Huawei Nova Y90 (2022), Nova Y60 (2021), Nova Y9a (2020)
  • Huawei Nova Y71 (2023)
  • Huawei Nova Y70 and Y70 plus (2022)
  • Huawei Nova Y61 (2022)
  • Huawei Nova 9 and 9 SE (2021)
  • Huawei nova 8 and nova 8i (2021)

The Huawei Mate Series

Experimental and extroverted, that’s what the Mate X’s looks shout. This series features the flip and fold Huawei phones.

Previous iterations of the Huawei Mate range were always big and powerful: typically suited to the busy executive. Of course, the executive who is upgrading their Huawei is going for the latest, and the Mate and P Series phones are the ones they choose.

Here are the Huawei Mate Series phones and the year of their release:

  • Huawei Mate X3 (2023)
  • Huawei Mate Xs 2 (2022)
  • Huawei Mate 50 Pro (2022)

Huawei Y Series

The Y Series was an affordable Huawei smartphone range. Huawei has not continued the series in South Africa as of 2022. You may still be able to pick up a Y Series phone where available, but don’t expect much technical support in terms of Operating System updates and the like.

The cheapest Huawei phones

The cheapest Huawei phones are the budget smartphones phones that use the above-average capacity for their screens, cameras, and computing power.

The cheapest Huawei phones are the Huawei Y Series phones. These entry-level phones are one step up from the basic non-touch phones like the Nokia 105. They can load simple apps like WhatsApp and Gmail Go. DO NOT expect any type of good performance from these as they are to simply keep in contact by making phone calls to your loved ones, send messages using Gmail Go or WhatsApp.

But since the Y Series has been discontinued we cannot recommend them becasue they will not be supported in the future (think secrutiy updates, etc.)

The cheapest Huawei phones are priced from R3,000 in South Africa, and they include the following:

  • Huawei Nova Y61 phones
  • Huawei Nova Y60 phones

Huawei has definitely went upmarket, with its cheapest phones starting at around R3,000 it is not exactly cheap, only the entry price.

The best value Huawei

When we think about getting great value from a phone we often want the best bang for our buck. It should not be pricey, but it should have most of the features we might want, without the gimmicks.

A great budget phone should:

  • Perform well in doing everyday tasks like browsing the internet and post videos on social media
  • Take good and clear pictures on a high-resolution screen
  • Because it is not intended for heavy use it should last a relatively long time (minimum of three years)

The Huawei budget phones that should be able to achieve this are the:

We will gladly spend the extra few hundred rands to upgrade from a 13MP main camera on the Y60 to the Y70’s 48MP. But, if it wasn’t for the camera the Y60 and Y70 are essentially the same.

Huawei’s best mid-range smartphone

A mid-range smartphone is an all-rounder, combining a very good camera, very good performance, and a good price in its bag.

Often, the phone designs are new but the parts are not. They may have their processors or cameras polished and enhanced somewhat and then put together with some other parts from the brand, and then voila! Here’s a new phone to fill in the gap between the flagships and cheap phones.

A mid-range phone should:

  • Have the capability to play online mobile games well
  • Have above-average main and selfie cameras
  • Be a distinctive range of phones, with a unique look from the rest of the brand’s phones
  • Make use of NFC for contactless payments (e.g.: FNB’s Tap to Pay), 5G connectivity, and fast charging

We suggest you check these phones if you have over R13,000 or more to spend on a phone:

The P40 lite was released in 2022, but it still packs a heavy punch!

These are Huawei’s best camera phones

A phone with a huge megapixel (MP) count might not be the best camera phone. It is prudent to look for a combination of MP count, lens, and other factors that influence camera quality.

A great camera may have these qualities:

  • Over 50MP main camera, to enable greater detail in the images you take, and an over 13MP selfie camera for good quality face shots
  • A great optic lens ensures quality videos and images
  • Software and hardware technology that enables optical and digital zoom ability

The Huawei smartphones with the best cameras include:

Huawei P50 Pro for around R18,000

Huawei nova 10 Pro for around R15,000

Huawei P50 Pro 128GB features, specs, and price.

The Huawei P50 Pro has received great reviews for its video and image-taking capabilities. But, truly, it is a phone and we can’t expect it to match an actual dedicated camera.

What we can expect from this camera phone is a great overall performer that you can use as a point-and-shoot camera. It will zoom into far-away images, take pretty pictures of your face, and store the great memories you make with up to 512GB of storage space.

The Huawei nova 10 Pro is a special phone, with a huge 60 MP front camera, but the P50 Pro brings its camera system together better.

We also recommend the P50 Pro as the best vlogging camera phone from Huawei for its 4K video selfie camera. This means you can vlog using both cameras and take great videos of your vlog whichever way you’re pointing your phone.
