Buy a cellphone cash

It makes sense to buy a cheap smartphone in cash, especially the budget smartphone brand that include Mobicel and Itel.

We picked the popular cheap entry level smartphone the Itel V51, which is in reach of most budgets in South Africa. The Itel V51 is also available for sale from Mr Price’s competitor, PEP Stores.

As the price indicates, the Itel V51 is priced the same as PEPCell, at R749. This is true for other smartphones being sold by Mr Price, thus we can conclude that the cellphones available for cash at Mr Price are reasonably priced.

Buy a cellphone on account

If you have a store credit account with MR Price you can buy your cellphone on account. You can open a new MR Price account and purchase a new smartphone using your account immediately after approval, unlike other credit stores that make you wait before buying a cellphone on credit.

To apply for a new account go to mrpmoney.com or go to the nearest Mr Price store. When applying for a new account Mr Price needs to determine if your monthly income, so you can take your latest 3-months bank statements and a copy of your ID to apply for a new account.

Mr Price will then determine how much credit to offer you. If you open an account solely to get a new cellphone from Mr Price you will only be able to get a cellphone equal or lower than your credit line.

You will need to apply for a MR Price Money store card with a 6 months (6/12) payment plan (or longer). After approval you can purchase a cellphone up to the amount of credit you’re approved for.

MR Price also allows its account holders to buy airtime on account. Airtime that MR Price account holders can purchase is limited to R300 per month.

Get a contract phone

Get a phone on contract from Mr Price by applying in-store. Mr Price offers cellphone contracts on MTN, Vodacom, and MR Price Mobile.

The type of cellphone contracts available from Mr Price are those that give you a monthly provision of data, minutes, and SMSs included in the contract. They also offer SIM-only contract which can be used as for your data needs. If you need another type of contract you should go straight to an MTN or Vodacom store directly where they will have a broader range of contract types.

Mr Price offers contract phones on virtually all their cellphones. So, if you want to take a Nokia 105 on contract you can. Or if you are looking for a cheap smartphone like the Tecno Spark 7 you should be able to find a contract available for it.

Buy a cellphone on lay-by

Mr Price says you can’t buy a cellphone on lay-by. By buying a cellphone on lay-by you could pay a 10% deposit and pay the rest of the money over three months.
