Recharging with voice bundles is an affordable way to make cheaper calls on the MTN network, and MTN goes all out to reduce call rates with a mix of promotional voice bundles and cheap call minutes. We’ve got a budget of R50, let’s see how many MTN call minutes get we get.

How do MTN voice bundles work?

As a qualifying MTN subscriber, you can buy voice bundles for your number, or convert your airtime to voice bundles. You can buy voice bundles that are valid to use for 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, or 30 days. When you purchase these bundles you are given minutes to make calls to all networks in South Africa, or to other MTN numbers only, which are used up on a per-second basis depending on your tariff plan.

All-Net stands for All Networks, which means the All-Net voice bundles may be used to make calls to any network in South Africa.

On-Net stands for On the Network, which means the On-Net voice bundles may be used only to make calls within the network you are on, which in this case is the MTN South Africa network.

How to buy MTN voice bundles

You can buy MTN’s voice bundles by purchasing voice bundles from banking channels like on the FNB app, or by converting your airtime to voice bundles.

Buy MTN voice bundles through your banking channels

We were able to buy an MTN 100 minutes All-Net voice bundle, valid for 30 days, for R50 from FNB. We were not able to buy an MTN voice bundle from Capitec Bank instead we were offered to buy airtime for our MTN number. Therefore, MTN voice bundles are not available on all South African banks.

Convert your airtime to voice bundles

We loaded our MTN number with airtime and managed to buy a 100-minute All-Net voice bundle, valid for 30 days, for R39 on the MTN app. We also received a 60 minutes On-Net voice bundle, valid for 3 days, for free.

To convert your airtime using the MTN app:

  • Open the MTN app and then log in
  • Tap on the Recharge button
  • Under recharge tap Voice, tap confirm, and then select 1) the number of days, and 2) recurring bundle or a once-off purchase.

To convert your airtime using the USSD code:

  • Dial *136*2*1# to buy MTN voice bundles
  • Reply option 1, All-Net to buy All-Net minutes, or any other suitable voice bundle option
  • Reply with the option to select the validity period or any other suitable voice bundle option

*pro-tip: Save the USSD code *136*2*1# in your phonebook as MTN Voice Bundles, and then you’ll just search for it next time.

We found out that it was R11 cheaper to buy 100 minutes by converting our airtime to voice bundles than by buying directly through our FNB banking channels. We are not sure why, but we are on the default MTN Bonanza tariff plan and that may have something to do with it. Our 100-minute All-Net voice bundle is on a per-second rate, on our MTN Bonanza tariff plan.

MTN updated their bundles in March 2022 and changed their 120 minutes voice bundle to 100 minutes voice bundle at a cost of R50, but we got it for R39 instead. A win for MTN consumers, either way!

MTN All Network minutes

All network minutes, or All-Net minutes, are voice bundles you can use to make calls to any network in South Africa. Once bought they are valid for a period of 1, 3, 7, or 30 days.

For regular users, it works out cheaper to buy minutes that are valid for 30 days than for 1 day, where they would load 180 call minutes for R49 which they would use for the entire month.
