Good but Cheap dual-SIM smartphones to buy in South Africa

Last modified date

The demand for dual-SIM phones in South Africa has grown, and as more people see their benefits they become even more popular. We have published an in-depth guide to buying a dual-SIM phone.

Find a network-unlocked dual SIM phone to get the best out of a dual SIM smartphone.

Here are the cheapest dual-SIM smartphones from the top cellphone brands available in South Africa.

Samsung Galaxy A24 Dual-SIM

Coming in at a price less than R5,000 is this Samsung. There might be cheaper or pricier options, but this is the sweet spot!

MTN is listed by Apple as a network operator in South Africa that will support their eSIM. Try them perhaps for a data-only contract for the embedded eSIM. It has a small battery, but it manages it quite well.

Nokia C32 Dual SIM (2023)

Battery capacity5,000mAh

A good effort from Nokia, the C32 is not flashy, not a technological masterpiece, but good for the job.

You could also pick up our previously recommended and now-cheaper Nokia G10 Dual SIM, which sells for R1,999 at Ackermans Connect. This alternative will start to show its age soon, but for those who don’t use their phones for heavy tasks but still need to be connected to two cellphone numbers simultaneously, and use the odd WhatsApp and other apps, we reckon this is still fine for another 2-3 years of service.

Huawei Nova Y61 64GB Dual SIM (2023)

SIM slot typeSIM 1, SIM 2, MicroSD Hybrid slot
Internet speedLTE/4G

The Huawei Nova Y61 is a decently good and competent phone, able to handle all the general tasks you throw at it with its 4GB of RAM. The lack of Google services might be a drawback for some, but if you need a phone that will do dual sim-card duty without hitting the bank too much you might find it in the Huawei Nova Y61.

Not a lot of alternatives from Huawei as it seems the number of phones coming to the South Africa market has slowed down. So, look for other Android-based brands if you’re shopping for smartphones that can be considered alternatives to the Huawei Nova Y61.

OPPO A38 128GB LTE Dual SIM

SIM slot typeSIM 1, SIM 2, MicroSD Dedicated Slot
Internet speedLTE/4G

The OPPO A38 128GB with dual stand-by dual-SIM capability.

Fairly priced at under R4,000, the OPPO A38 is a budget smartphone featuring a 50MP camera and 4GB of RAM. This might be the entry to the OPPO brand, by seeing how it performs, if you like the operating system, and then upgrade to the flagship OPPO smartphones.

Our previous recommendation was the OPPO A16, which was introduced in 2021, so it might be a bit old. The A16 has 32GB of storage space but can be increased with a MicroSD card. But this particular model’s generation has been upgraded to the A17K, which we don’t recommend because of its 8MP main camera and small 3GB RAM.

Xiaomi Redmi 12C 64GB Dual Sim

Internet speedLTE/4G

Battery capacity5,000mAh

You can find great alternatives in the Redmi 12 range, which are dual-SIM phones! The phones in the Redmi 12 range are entry-level smartphones, which should not have been given dual-SIM capability because of their RAM specifications.

vivo Y21 Dual Sim 64GB 4G

SIM slot typeSIM 1, SIM 2, MicroSD Dedicated Slot
Highest Internet speedLTE/4G

vivo is a growing brand, and the vivo Y17s is a great budget smartphone to get in 2024. With fast LTE internet speed capabilities and a 4GB RAM this dual-SIM smartphone throws a nice punch. It is a great buy for those looking balance their budget with a good-performing smartphone.

Tecno Spark 10c Dual SIM

SIM slot typeSIM 1, SIM 2, MicroSD Dedicated Slot
Highest Internet speedLTE/4G
Dual SIM Dual StandbyDual standby
Battery capacity5,000mAh
PriceR2,599 from Mr Price
Tecno Spark 10C 64GB Dual-SIM specs.

The Tecno Spark 10C Dual-SIM sounds too good to be true for its price of less than R3,000. A big screen, 4GBs of RAM, and 128GBs of storage of space are specifications we expect from R4,000 and R5,000 budget smartphones. This one seems like a good buy as opposed to its other stablemates like the Spark 8 Go.

We consider the Tecno Spark 10C to be the best cheap dual-SIM smartphone in South Africa.

We consider the Spark 8 Go 64GB Dual-SIM the best cheap smartphone in South Africa for 2023 but would not consider it for this list

Hisense U605 8GB Dual-SIM specs.

The cheapest dual-SIM phone you can buy in South Africa is the Hisense U605 8GB Dual-SIM.

It is purely to have as a backup phone or burner phone. It has a RAM of 1GB and a storage size of 8GB. The operating system is a very old Android 8 Go, which possibly is not updateable to the latest version of Android Go.

It’s suitable for anyone who absolutely needs a very cheap phone that can take two SIM cards. It is not able to use LTE internet technology, which means it will have a slow internet connection.

Specs for a good dual-SIM smartphone

Dual-SIM phones are known for using a lot of battery power, as you can imagine, and most often have a data-only SIM card for mobile data together with a voice SIM. A good dual-SIM smartphone should have a minimum of the below specifications so that you don’t experience a bad network reception, a drained battery, or build quality/reliability issues:

  • SIM slot type: We prefer a phone with a ton of space to store our 4K videos, so a SIM slot that takes 2 SIM cards + a microSD card simultaneously is ideal!
  • Internet speed: At a minimum have an LTE connection. MTN and Vodacom will be moving away from 3G very soon, which means they will stop putting resources towards supporting it. Your VoLTE will come in handy during this time as well.
  • Not locked to any network: If you’re going to buy a phone on contract make sure the phone is not going to be network locked. You want to be flexible with your data SIM 2, especially for data contracts.
  • Dual SIM Dual Standby: A dual-SIM phone that uses dual sim dual standby (DSDS) means you are ready to be connected on either cellphone number at the same time.
  • A good capacity battery: A big battery has a capacity of over 4,000mAh and should last you an entire day of heavy use without having to recharge and you only have to make sure you leave the house with a full battery for it to not be done by 4 pm!
